Hi, humans! I’m
Stanley and I love summer time. I get to take my
humans camping, for boat trips on the lake and
lead them on camping adventures! My humans tell
me that summer can be dangerous for dogs and
cats! Here are some tips for keeping your furry
sidekick safe during your summer adventure.
- Know the
signs of overheating: rapid breathing, heavy
panting, drooling, fatigue, muscle tremors,
and staggering. If you see any of these
signs, immediately begin to cool the pet.
Provide shade and drinking water in small
amounts, apply water to the body to help
with cooling, move the animal to a cooler
environment if possible, and immediately
call a vet.
- Even on
mild days, the temperature inside a vehicle
can climb to fatal levels very quickly. When
you bring your furry sidekicks along, be
sure to stick together. If you’re
uncomfortable, they probably are too.
- Provide
dense shade, good ventilation and access to
cool water for pets who spend time outside.
Provide at least two water sources in
weighted containers that will not tip over.
A mister or kiddy pool is a big plus! Be
sure to choose a site that gets shade all
day.
- Remember
that your furry sidekicks can’t cool
themselves by sweating. Plan walks or hikes
for early morning or evening, and steer
clear of any surfaces too hot for your own
bare feet.
